Stroll up the High Street of Medieval Kilkenny in South East Ireland and you’re in Europe’s recently voted most friendly and cleanest city but turn off onto a small cobbled side lane, the Butterslip, and you’re in another era. Under the tall grey walls is the entrance to a fourteenth century townhouse now Petronella Restaurant - Cafe.
Under the original rafters and tucked away behind medieval walls, our regular storytellers, Jim Meagher and Paddy Fitzpatrick have been warming the hearts of tourists for some time now. Candlelight, good Irish traditional fare and music combine effortlessly to recreate the art of storytelling which has been handed down over the centuries, revealing what is inherently wonderful in all things Irish: a roguish sense of humour and a love for the quirks and foibles of life as it was.
You’ll be among friends, laughter and an atmosphere where you too will be welcomed to share what you would like, a song, a dance or a tune. The beat of the bodhran, the glint in the eye, the narrative perfection, all of these we share with our guests to bring them back to an older Ireland, and as old as you like, as you too may sense the witchcraft as you walk home later, past the Tholsel and the very spot where Petronella de Meath paid at the stake for the sins of her Lady, Dame Alice Kyteler.
